Tanzanian musician Billnass has suffered devastating losses after his electronics shop, Nenga Tronix, was torched by protesters amid widespread unrest following the country’s disputed general elections. The chaos erupted across Dar es Salaam and other cities as citizens took to the streets demanding transparency and electoral reform.
Unrest Follows Disputed October 29 Elections
The protests began shortly after Tanzanians voted on October 29 to elect new national and parliamentary leaders. Reports of irregularities, opposition arrests, and a heavy police presence quickly fueled public outrage. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces escalated, forcing authorities to impose a curfew in Dar es Salaam after property destruction and injuries were reported across several districts.
Hospitals in the capital confirmed receiving dozens of casualties from the violent confrontations, while businesses and public infrastructure suffered severe damage. The unrest soon spread to other regions, including Mbeya and Tunduma, where protesters blocked roads and set fires in acts of defiance against the government.
Targeting of Pro-Government Celebrities
Billnass, who is married to fellow Tanzanian singer Nandy, has long been a vocal supporter of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party. He frequently performed at campaign rallies, shared pro-government content, and openly endorsed the president’s leadership online.
In the wake of the contested election results, however, this association made him a target. Protesters accused the artist of aligning with the ruling elite and being “out of touch” with ordinary citizens’ frustrations. In a video circulating on social media, flames can be seen engulfing Nenga Tronix as crowds chant anti-government slogans and celebrate the act of arson.
Protests Spread Beyond Dar es Salaam
Demonstrations quickly expanded beyond the capital. Protesters in Mbeya and Tunduma reportedly set fires and damaged property, prompting the deployment of additional police units nationwide. Authorities warned that anyone found responsible for acts of vandalism or incitement would face severe legal consequences.
Meanwhile, internet connectivity was restricted across Tanzania, with several major platforms—including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter)—becoming temporarily inaccessible. The blackout deepened public anger, as citizens accused the government of attempting to silence dissent.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
The incident sparked divided opinions online. Some users applauded the protesters for “sending a message” to celebrities perceived as complicit with the government, while others condemned the violence, calling for peaceful demonstrations instead of destruction. Many artists, including Diamond Platnumz and Ali Kiba, have also faced mounting criticism and threats from angry citizens.
Silence from Billnass as Authorities Investigate
As of now, Billnass has not publicly commented on the attack. Friends and fans have expressed concern for his safety and urged the government to take swift action against those responsible for the arson. Police officials say investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators and restore calm across affected regions.
The destruction of Nenga Tronix highlights the deepening political and social divide in Tanzania, where tensions between citizens, authorities, and public figures continue to escalate. As the nation grapples with unrest and censorship, questions remain about the future of political stability — and the safety of influential voices caught in the crossfire.
