Kenyan actor and filmmaker Brian Kabugi, popularly known as Real Bugi, is set to premiere his highly anticipated short film, Mid Young Crisis: The Return, on October 11 at Anga Diamond Cinema, Diamond Plaza 2. The project delves into the emotional and psychological challenges young people face in navigating relationships, self-identity, and modern pressures.
A Continuation of a Beloved Series
The film builds on the story from the popular YouTube series Mid Young Crisis, expanding its exploration of love, friendship, and personal discovery. Speaking ahead of the release, Bugi described the project as a reflection of contemporary youth realities. “This is more than just a film — it’s a mirror of what young people go through every day,” he said.
Exploring Trauma, Healing, and Relationships
Bugi’s character examines how unresolved childhood experiences influence adult life, particularly in romantic relationships. “We tried to get deep with the writing, touching on childhood traumas and how they manifest in conversations between my character and Makena. The confusion, vulnerability, and uncertainty you see in the film are things I’ve lived through as a young man trying to figure life out,” he shared.
Community and friendship also form a central theme. “I always have my boys around me — it’s the reality of how we support each other through our highs and lows,” Bugi noted. On love and healing, he offered an emotional takeaway: “Don’t go back to your ex. Heal your wounds, don’t let them define you, and always stay true to yourself.”
Reviving Kenyan Cinema
Bugi sees the film as part of a larger mission to reinvigorate Kenya’s cinema culture. He emphasized the importance of reconnecting filmmakers with audiences through accessible screening platforms. “The future of Kenyan film is about rebuilding that relationship with viewers — bringing people back to cinemas, creating platforms beyond TV, and building our own loyal audiences,” he said.
Cast and Crew
The film features a young and energetic cast, including Makena Kahuha, Claudia Naisabwa, Faiz O, Nungari Kiore, and Bugi himself. Behind the scenes, Festurs Kir serves as director of photography, Brian Obigwa as director, Kenrich Mwanza as writer, and Anchie Nginja leads production.
Anticipation Ahead of Premiere
Bugi hopes Mid Young Crisis: The Return will spark conversations about the struggles young people face and inspire self-reflection. As the premiere approaches, fans eagerly anticipate a relatable and authentic portrayal of Kenya’s youth experience on the big screen.
