Kenyan content creator Cashmere has stirred heated online debate after orchestrating what many are calling one of the boldest and most controversial publicity stunts of the year.
For weeks, Cashmere promoted her “wedding” both online and through exclusive invitations, instructing guests to follow an all-black dress code. The guest list was star-studded with fellow influencers, friends, and admirers, all dressed to the nines in anticipation of a glamorous matrimonial celebration.
But when the moment arrived, the “bride” stepped out not in a flowing gown, but in a crisp white suit and promptly dropped a bombshell.
“Today I am getting married to the love of my life it’s a training institute,” she told the crowd, revealing that the entire event was actually the launch of her new business venture.
While the announcement drew some applause, it was quickly overshadowed by a wave of outrage from attendees who felt misled and financially exploited.
Fashion and beauty influencer Winnie Njenga revealed she skipped her cousin’s traditional wedding to attend. “Why lie about having a wedding? People actually spend on their outfits,” she lamented, adding that her dress alone cost Ksh 60,000.
Celebrity hairdresser Jony Hairdresser and model Hannah Benta also expressed disappointment, with Hannah stating she spent Ksh 3,500 on makeup and tailored a dress worth Ksh 30,000. “I was so prepared to cry,” she said.
The expenses didn’t stop there. Guest Gloria Ntazola stunned followers by revealing her outfit’s price tag: Ksh 150,000 for hair, Ksh 55,000 for jewelry, Ksh 150,000 for the dress, and Ksh 44,000 for heels.
Even those who suspected the wedding might not be real felt deceived. “We were played,” said Prince Mwiti. “And the way I had worn a good suit like a Nigerian.”
Social media reactions have been split, with some applauding Cashmere’s creativity and others condemning her for what they see as a manipulative marketing ploy.
Whether viewed as genius publicity or a breach of trust, the stunt has undeniably made Cashmere the talk of Kenya’s influencer scene and left her guests with expensive outfits and no wedding memories to match.
