Gospel musician and disability rights advocate Daddy Owen has strongly condemned the rising trend of mocking persons with disabilities on social media, describing it as a shameful practice that undermines human dignity and societal values.
Condemnation of Online Insensitivity
In a public statement, Daddy Owen expressed deep disappointment over individuals who exploit social media to ridicule people with disabilities. “As a disability activist, I am deeply saddened and appalled by individuals who have chosen to misuse their social platforms to insult and demean persons with disabilities and their conditions. I strongly condemn such reprehensible behaviour,” he said.
Warning Against Misuse of Freedom of Expression
The artist cautioned that such actions could backfire, potentially giving authorities grounds to impose stricter digital regulations that might infringe on fundamental freedoms. “These actions only serve to legitimise the government’s enforcement of laws such as the Cybercrime Bill. We must not allow our misconduct to become the justification for policies that may ultimately infringe upon fundamental freedoms,” he warned.
Advocating for Compassion and Empathy
Daddy Owen reminded the public that disability is a universal condition that can affect anyone at any time. “Disability is a club that anyone can join at any moment. Some are born into it, but the majority acquire disabilities through unforeseen circumstances such as accidents or medical conditions. No one is immune,” he explained. He urged Kenyans to replace mockery with compassion and empathy, citing the Swahili proverb, “Usitukane wakunga na uzazi ungalipo,” which calls for humility and respect.
Promoting Inclusion and Respect
As a long-time advocate for disability inclusion, Daddy Owen emphasized that online mockery erodes Kenya’s shared values of dignity and equality. He called on citizens to use their platforms to promote understanding, awareness, and inclusivity rather than hate or ridicule.
A Call for Responsible Digital Citizenship
Through his message, Daddy Owen encouraged Kenyans to reflect on their digital behavior, reminding them that even small acts of cruelty online contribute to a culture of exclusion. His appeal serves as a powerful call to action for responsible social media use and the protection of human dignity for all.
