Dennis Itumbi, Kenya’s prominent digital strategist and current Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, recently opened up about his early life and unique path from evangelism to government service. In a candid podcast interview with journalist Alex Mwakideu, Itumbi shared how his formative experiences shaped the way he now influences the nation.
From “Evangelist Dennis” to Media and Politics
Before entering professional media, Itumbi was deeply involved in ministry. Reflecting on his high school days, he recalled being known as “Evangelist Dennis,” passionately preaching and creating inspirational content, including posters and short videos that still exist today. Even as a student, he demonstrated a strong sense of justice, once stepping down as a prefect during assembly over what he perceived as unfair treatment.
After high school, Itumbi transitioned from ministry to journalism, joining Baraka FM and later expanding into blogging and political communication. While he no longer preaches from the pulpit, he emphasized that his mission to inspire and influence others continues through policy and governance.
“I’ve just changed the form of preaching,” he explained, highlighting how he now communicates and impacts lives by shaping initiatives that directly affect the well-being of Kenyans.
Driving National Transformation
Itumbi cited several examples of his work, including the transformation of the Social Health Insurance Fund, which has seen registered users grow from seven million to 26 million. He also highlighted the government’s affordable housing initiative, which has provided employment for 350,000 people and is constructing 160,000 houses. These projects, he noted, create business opportunities for small-scale suppliers in the Jua Kali sector, illustrating the ripple effect of policy-driven action.
Looking ahead, Itumbi envisions further national transformation ahead of the 2027 elections, including the construction of 20 mini-stadiums across the country, with this year’s Jamhuri Day celebration set to take place at the new Talanta Stadium.
Influence Beyond the Pulpit
Through his work, Itumbi illustrates that influence is not confined to a pulpit or microphone. Whether shaping government policy or inspiring citizens through strategic projects, he continues to deliver meaningful impact, proving that preaching can take many forms—and that one can inspire others while operating from positions of power and responsibility.
