Comedian and activist Eric Omondi recently explained his decision not to attend the major solidarity rally for TikTok star Kaluma Boy in Othaya, Nyeri. The event, held on September 28, 2025, drew thousands of Kenyans supporting the young content creator and his ailing father.
Omondi clarified that his absence was intentional. Far from indifference, he said it was a deliberate statement to encourage ordinary citizens to take ownership of social causes.
“When I saw people going to Kaluma, I said I will not go — because you don’t want to take the spotlight everywhere,” Omondi stated.
He emphasized that activism should be community-driven, not reliant on celebrities. His choice underlined a goal he has long championed: fostering a culture where citizens feel empowered to make positive change independently.
Celebrating Citizen-Led Solidarity
The rally in Nyeri saw a massive outpouring of generosity, with attendees organising buses, motorbikes, and caravans to visit Kaluma Boy’s home. Omondi noted that by stepping back, the focus remained on the ordinary Kenyans who showed up, rather than the celebrity spotlight.
“If I had gone, the focus would have shifted from the real heroes of the day — the Kenyans who showed up,” he said.
The comedian acknowledged the energy and commitment of citizens, describing the event as a powerful example of collective action without political or institutional coordination.
Continuing Support Behind the Scenes
Although he skipped the rally, Omondi remains actively involved in helping Kaluma Boy’s family. He has been coordinating therapy sessions for the TikToker’s father and maintaining contact with the family to provide ongoing support.
He also encouraged other groups to emulate this citizen-led activism, suggesting that if TikTok communities can unite for causes like Kaluma Boy, similar initiatives could emerge on Instagram, motorist networks, or other digital platforms.

The Nyeri rally has been hailed as a landmark moment for digital-driven solidarity in Kenya. Omondi’s decision to stay away amplified the message that ordinary citizens are capable of driving meaningful change, reinforcing his long-standing philosophy of empowerment through action.
