Thousands of passionate football fans turned Thika Super Highway into a vibrant spectacle on Sunday afternoon as they made their way to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for Harambee Stars’ opening match in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) against the Leopards of DR Congo.
From early afternoon, the highway transformed into a moving sea of red, black, green, and white the colours of the Kenyan flag as supporters poured in from various parts of the city and beyond. The atmosphere was electrifying. Matatus blared patriotic tunes and chants, vuvuzelas pierced the air, and cheers echoed from every corner, creating a festival-like environment.
Fans of all ages, clad in national team jerseys and waving miniature flags, exuded pride and anticipation. “This is more than a game; it’s about unity and showing support for our boys,” said John Otieno, a fan who had travelled from Githurai with a group of fellow supporters.
To manage the swelling crowds and ensure safety, security was intensified along the highway and around the stadium. Police officers were strategically deployed to monitor movement, direct traffic, and ensure order along key entry points, particularly near the Roysambu area.
Sections of the service lanes along Thika Road were temporarily closed, especially around Roysambu, to minimize congestion and streamline access to the venue. Despite the traffic buildup, fans remained in high spirits, many choosing to walk or take boda bodas the final stretch to Kasarani.
Inside the stadium, expectations were sky-high as Harambee Stars looked to begin their CHAN campaign on a strong note against a formidable DR Congo side. The sheer turnout of fans served as a testament to the country’s undying passion for football.
The build-up to kick-off at 3pm was nothing short of a carnival. As the crowd roared in anticipation, it was clear that win or lose, the day would be remembered for the incredible show of national pride and unity displayed by the fans along Thika Super Highway.
