Malik Lemuel, famously known by his stage name Govi, has shed light on why he chose to step away from the spotlight of the beloved Kenyan television show Machachari. The show, which catapulted many young talents into the limelight, was home to big names like Almasi, Baha, Joy, Stella, MaDVD, and Govi himself.
In a recent conversation with fellow former child star Junior during a live TikTok session, Govi disclosed the reason behind his decision to quit acting on Machachari after over a decade. According to him, his exit was a personal decision made shortly after the show’s conclusion in 2019. “I had been on the show for 12 years. That was enough for me. I felt it was time to move on and explore new paths,” he explained.
Following his departure, Govi noted a shift in dynamics among the cast members. What was once a tight-knit group slowly began to drift apart. He hinted that competition and jealousy crept in, which created tension among some of the former co-stars. Despite this, he emphasized that he holds no ill feelings toward any of them and that each of them is focused on their own journey.
Govi also touched on his personal growth since leaving the show. While many of his fans expected him to continue with acting full-time, he took a different route, choosing to pursue his education. He enrolled at university and successfully graduated with a degree in international relations and governance. “People don’t always understand that we come from different backgrounds. I chose school, and now I’m out here hustling just like everyone else,” he shared.
Although he has kept a relatively low profile compared to some of his former co-stars, Govi made a brief return to the screen through his role in the Showmax series Pepeta, where he earned a six-figure salary. He landed the role while he was already filming another production at the coast, showcasing his growing versatility as an actor. The project marked a turning point, with fans excited to see him take on more serious and mature roles.
Apart from his acting and academic pursuits, Govi also addressed long-standing speculation about his personal life. He clarified that he is not gay, a rumor that has persisted due to his decision not to post photos with women. He once shared pictures of his girlfriend online, but the relationship did not withstand the public scrutiny and external pressure, eventually leading to a breakup. Nevertheless, he expressed a desire to settle down early and focus on building a stable future.
Reflecting on the bond with his former castmates, Govi assured that there’s no animosity between them. Everyone has simply gone their separate ways, and he respects their individual paths. While some fans may miss seeing the Machachari stars together, Govi’s story highlights the reality of growing up in the public eye and choosing growth beyond fame.
Now focused on his passion for change and community development, Govi has made it clear that though he stepped away from the spotlight, his journey is far from over.
