Renowned Kenyan musician Nixon Wesonga, popularly known as Visita, has candidly shared the hardships he has faced in recent years. Once a celebrated artist with chart-topping hits, Visita’s life has taken a dramatic turn, leading him into a period marked by financial instability, homelessness, and personal struggles.
According to his revelations during a recent interview, Visita has been homeless for over a year after being evicted from his rental home due to unpaid rent. He reflected on the difficult circumstances that followed, including nights spent in the cold and heavy rains. Despite having once enjoyed fame and success in the music industry, he found himself forced to take up menial jobs to survive. At one point, he worked at construction sites to make ends meet.
“I was kicked out of my house a year ago,” he explained. “It was during the rainy season, and I had nowhere to go. I had to survive, and that meant doing any work I could find, including casual jobs in mjengos.”
His situation was so dire that, after being kicked out, he didn’t immediately leave the compound of his former residence. For three months, he lived around the premises, finding shelter where he could, and surviving with very limited resources. During this period, he also experienced hunger and the mental toll that comes with such harsh living conditions.
Fortunately, a friend later offered him temporary shelter in a recording studio in Mirema. The studio, primarily a commercial space for video shoots and music production, has since become his current home. While grateful for the roof over his head, Visita noted that the arrangement is precarious—should a client need the space, he would have to vacate. Despite this uncertainty, he expressed deep appreciation for the support, saying the space has played a key role in helping him heal mentally and emotionally.
“That place helped me to heal,” he shared. “When you’re down like that, you can lose your sanity. I almost did. But staying there gave me the breathing space I needed to try and pull myself together.”
Visita’s primary concern now is how to regain his footing in the music industry. He dreams of acquiring music equipment that would allow him to restart his career and begin producing again. He believes that with the right tools, he can bounce back and rebuild what he once had.
During the livestreamed conversation, viewers who were touched by his story sent in monetary contributions. By the end of the show, he had received a total of KSh 35,000—a gesture that brought some hope and showed the power of community support.
Visita’s story is a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change, even for those once in the limelight. Yet, despite the adversity, he remains hopeful, determined to return to his passion and rebuild his life through music.
