Comedian Oga Obinna once again found himself at the centre of controversy after dramatically walking out of an interview, citing disrespect from fellow entertainer Dr Ofweneke. The incident, which unfolded during a recent episode of a TV talk show, began with the two comedians exchanging their usual playful banter. Things quickly took a turn, however, after a joke escalated beyond what Obinna considered acceptable.
The show kicked off with high energy and laughter, as Obinna accused the host of speaking ill about him. To spice up the theatrics, he called on his large bodyguard, who humorously carried Ofweneke off the set. The audience laughed along, assuming it was all part of the act. But when Ofweneke returned moments later and splashed water on Obinna, the mood instantly shifted.
Clearly unimpressed, Obinna removed his glasses and confronted Ofweneke on-air. He demanded an apology, expressing his disappointment and branding the act as disrespectful and uncalled for. “You’re my brother, but this is wrong,” he said firmly. He gave Ofweneke an ultimatum—to either apologise or continue the interview alone.
Rather than apologise, Ofweneke continued to play it off as part of the entertainment. He even jokingly asked for more water to be brought to the stage. This only fueled Obinna’s frustration. Declaring the interaction unprofessional and offensive, he brought the segment to a halt. “It has been an honour to come to the show, but what just happened is unacceptable. You could do better,” Obinna said before walking out, accompanied by his bodyguard.
Even as he exited, he reminded Ofweneke that this wasn’t just harmless banter, but a sign of disrespect. “From brother to brother, what you’ve done is not good. Don’t treat it like it’s a joke. Own up,” he said before leaving the studio.
The dramatic exit quickly became a hot topic on social media, with fans and followers sharing mixed reactions. Some felt Obinna overreacted, especially considering he had earlier instructed his bodyguard to theatrically lift the host from his seat. Others defended his stance, saying water should never have been thrown, no matter the context. Comments ranged from calling the incident childish to questioning whether Obinna himself had crossed a line earlier in the show.
This isn’t the first time Obinna has walked out of a live interview. In a separate appearance on a radio show, he also exited abruptly when questions turned to his public spat with fellow comedian Mulamwah. At the time, he explained that he was only responding to rumours and didn’t appreciate being painted as the instigator. Again, signalling to his bodyguard, he left the studio mid-discussion.
These recurring dramatic exits have sparked a growing debate about the fine line between comedy and disrespect, and whether entertainers need to draw clearer boundaries during public appearances. As reactions continue to pour in online, it remains to be seen whether either comedian will offer further comment or reconciliation.
