Kenyan digital creator Gloria Ntazola has ignited debate online after criticizing what she describes as the “ghettoization” of Nairobi’s traditionally upscale neighborhoods. Gloria condemned developers for overpricing poorly designed apartments and ignoring basic urban planning standards in areas such as Kilimani, Lavington, and Kileleshwa.
Overpriced and Poorly Designed Apartments
In a series of Instagram stories, Gloria highlighted the skyrocketing cost of living, noting that residents are paying up to KSh 80,000 for apartments she claims are overcrowded and poorly built. “Right now, if you live in Kilimani, Lavington, Kileleshwa, it’s becoming like blocks in the U.S., with long corridors and doors facing each other like dormitories,” she said. She also criticized open-plan kitchens that make simple tasks like cooking challenging despite the high rent.
Rampant Construction and Infrastructure Issues
Gloria condemned the ongoing construction boom, pointing out that high-rise buildings are being squeezed into every available space without consideration for residents’ comfort or supporting infrastructure. “I’m not kidding, there’s construction everywhere with tall buildings up to 20 storeys. You can’t drive three minutes without seeing a new construction, and they are so tight — it looks like expensive slums,” she noted.
She also highlighted the impact of noise pollution and poor building maintenance on tenants’ daily lives. “The cheapest house in this neighborhood is KSh 65,000 for one bedroom, and others go up to KSh 250,000. Imagine paying all that only to be woken up by construction noises at 7 a.m.,” Gloria added.
Residents Echo Frustrations
Challenging the notion that Kilimani or Lavington signifies luxury, Gloria labeled Kilimani “the ghetto of the ghettoest,” while also pointing out the poor state of roads and infrastructure. Her remarks have resonated with many Nairobi residents frustrated by rapid, unplanned urban growth and the mismatch between high rents and quality of living.
Urban Planning and Housing Debate
Gloria’s commentary has sparked broader discussions on affordable housing, urban planning, and tenant rights in Nairobi, highlighting the need for better quality control, sustainable development, and responsible construction in high-demand neighborhoods.
