Ghanaian Afro-Fusion star Gyakie has officially released her highly anticipated new album After Midnight, a project that marks a bold step forward in her musical journey. Known for her soulful blend of Afro-R&B, highlife, and alternative influences, Gyakie affectionately called the “Songbird” uses this body of work to showcase her evolution from a budding talent into a fully realized artist stepping into her power.
The daughter of Ghanaian highlife legend Nana Acheampong, Gyakie carries a rich musical legacy, but After Midnight is uniquely her own. Inspired by the stillness and serenity of nighttime, much of the project was created during late hours. “Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie shares. “It is within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write.” This creative intimacy shines through the album’s lyrical honesty and layered soundscapes.
The project opens with a cinematic intro, introduced through a stirring narrative trailer directed by Alex Piper, known for his work with Rema, Wizkid, and Travis Scott. From there, the 17-track collection unfolds into an eclectic journey of emotion and sound. Already familiar singles such as “Sankofa” and “Unconditional” teased Gyakie’s storytelling depth, while new offerings like “Fire on the Mountain” and “Story” expand the album’s reach.
After Midnight also boasts powerful collaborations with global talents including 6LACK, Shatta Wale, Kojey Radical, Headie One, Omar Sterling, and Young Jonn. In a particularly touching moment, Gyakie samples her father on “Y2K Luv” featuring Omar Sterling—an homage to her musical roots and a symbol of continuity in Ghanaian music.
Sonically, the album shifts effortlessly between stripped-down soul, rhythmic highlife grooves, amapiano-infused anthems, and late-night ballads. This variety mirrors the emotional spectrum of Gyakie’s journey, blending vulnerability with strength and personal reflection with cultural pride.
“This album is about becoming,” Gyakie explains. “It’s about embracing all the versions of myself—the soft parts, the strong parts, the past, the present, and the dreams I’m chasing.” With After Midnight, Gyakie offers not only a deeply personal statement but also a universal soundtrack for healing, joy, and self-discovery.
