Former Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has received an international award from the United Nations in recognition of his efforts in advancing social justice and youth mentorship. The honour, presented at the UN Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, seeks to highlight individuals who are making significant contributions toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in youth empowerment, climate solutions, and addressing emerging societal challenges.
Mwaura was celebrated for his role in championing youth-led projects, mentoring young people, and pushing for inclusive policies both within Kenya and across the wider region. In addition, his focus on climate-related interventions and ensuring young voices are represented in policy discussions played a key part in his selection.
In a statement on Monday evening, Mwaura expressed deep gratitude for the recognition. “Glad to finally receive this prestigious award on social justice and youth mentorship from the United Nations Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. So very honoured for this great recognition. Glory be to God. I remain committed to the cause,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Mwaura added, “Sometimes, the quietest battles shape the loudest legacies fought away from the spotlight, unseen by many, until the day the world pauses to recognise them.”
Mwaura, who previously served in both the National Assembly and Senate as a nominated legislator representing persons with disabilities, has been widely acknowledged for transforming his personal struggles into a mission of public service. In parliament, he became a strong advocate for disability rights, inclusivity, and social justice, amplifying voices often overlooked in policymaking spaces.
He now joins a growing list of Kenyans honoured with the same award. Last year, Ezekiel Mutua, the former CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), was recognised during the UN World Humanitarian Day in Kathmandu, Nepal. Mutua was celebrated for his youth empowerment initiatives, ethical leadership, and transformative community impact.
For Mwaura, the award not only acknowledges his past contributions but also strengthens his resolve to continue shaping opportunities for young people while promoting justice and equity. His recognition underscores the critical role Kenyan leaders are playing in advancing global humanitarian and developmental goals.
