Kenyan businessman and political strategist Jimi Wanjigi has shared an intimate look into a transformative chapter of his life — the moment he decided to quit alcohol at just 25. Speaking candidly, Wanjigi reflected on how that decision became a turning point that reshaped his mindset, focus, and approach to success.
Realization and Turning Point
“At age 25, I stopped drinking, and I really advise people to learn to take a step back,” Wanjigi revealed. He questioned the culture of endless parties and social gatherings that often revolve around reliving the past instead of building the future. “Kwanza hii ya sherehe — I asked myself, what is this nonsense? We are just talking about what we did last weekend and how great we were in school. We are not even talking about tomorrow. Since then, I quit.”
Letting Go of Distractions
Wanjigi described how alcohol had gradually become a distraction, consuming time and energy that could have been used for personal growth. “Alcohol was taking growth away from me,” he said. “It made me realize how much time and energy people waste talking about the past, rather than planning the future.”
Focus on Growth and Clarity
After quitting, Wanjigi redirected his attention to entrepreneurship, self-discipline, and long-term planning. “I wanted to start making decisions that would affect my tomorrow — not just reliving yesterday,” he noted, emphasizing that the change gave him a renewed sense of purpose and drive.
Beyond Morality — A Matter of Discipline
Wanjigi clarified that his decision wasn’t rooted in moral or religious motivations, but rather in the need for discipline and clarity. “At the age of 25, I quit drinking alcohol. Nothing happened — I just wanted to change my lifestyle. I was tired that every weekend, we were just drinking and eating, doing the same thing over and over,” he explained.
A Lesson in Self-Awareness
He urged others to pause and evaluate their life choices, stressing that meaningful growth comes from self-awareness and intentional living. “You must learn when to step back and reflect on where your life is going. For me, quitting alcohol was one of those decisions that gave me direction and purpose,” he said.
Inspiring Kenya’s Youth
Wanjigi’s story strikes a chord at a time when concerns about alcohol consumption and substance use are increasingly common among young Kenyans. His experience highlights how personal discipline and conscious decision-making can transform one’s career trajectory and overall life satisfaction.
