Kenyan gospel singer Kambua Mathu has shared a deeply personal message to mothers who have experienced the heartbreaking loss of a baby, aligning her reflections with Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month in October. Drawing from her own grief, Kambua reached out to bereaved parents to offer solace and solidarity.
The beloved artist tragically lost her second-born son, Malachi, and has since spoken openly about the courage it takes to share her story. In a heartfelt social media post, she admitted that even now, opening up about her experience requires immense strength. “Sometimes I don’t feel as brave as I would like to be,” she wrote. “But I will keep finding the courage to share my journey to honor the life of my precious boy, Malachi.”
Kambua specifically addressed mothers who have heard the devastating words, “I’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat,” and those who have walked out of hospitals without their newborns. She acknowledged the difficult emotional and practical challenges parents face after such losses — from deciding what to do with their baby’s clothes to facing the painful task of planning an infant’s funeral.
“I want to remember every mom who’s had to hear the words, ‘I’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat.’ Every mom who walked into a delivery room pregnant and walked out empty-handed,” she shared. “I’m sorry that you have had to know this pain. I’m sorry that it hurts so much sometimes. I’m sorry that you sometimes feel stuck in grief. I see you.”
Malachi passed away in February 2021, just days after his birth, following complications. Kambua revealed that her baby fought hard to stay with them and that a dedicated team of doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to save him. His passing came slightly over a year after she and her husband, Jackson Mathu, welcomed their first child, Nathaniel, after nearly a decade of waiting.
Through her words, Kambua sought to validate the grief of parents who’ve lost infants, offering a compassionate reminder that they are not alone. Her openness has made her a source of comfort for many mothers navigating similar experiences. During Infant Loss Awareness Month, her reflections serve as a powerful call for empathy, understanding, and the importance of honoring every little life, no matter how brief.
