Renowned media personality Kamene Goro recently opened up about the lucrative nature of radio broadcasting, revealing that she once earned over KSh 1 million per month while working on radio. Her revelation came during an appearance on a cooking show hosted by media personality and food enthusiast Boina.
During the conversation, Kamene was asked if she would consider hosting a Kiswahili radio show for a salary of KSh 1 million per month. She confidently responded that she had already been paid more than that in her career. However, she dismissed the idea of taking up a Kiswahili show, citing her lack of fluency in the language.
“But at what cost? My Kiswahili is not that fluent, and I just can’t do it. What I do on radio is different—it’s about life stories, the crazy things I do, and the crazy things I see people doing,” Kamene explained.
When asked about her favorite co-host, Kamene fondly named Jalang’o, noting that his easygoing nature made their working relationship enjoyable and extended into a friendship beyond the studio. On the other hand, she did not shy away from mentioning the most challenging colleague she had worked with. Though she refrained from explicitly naming him, Boina eventually identified Andrew Kibe, to which Kamene nodded in agreement.
Currently, Kamene works at NRG Radio and previously made headlines after declaring herself the new CEO of the station. She later clarified that the announcement was a publicity stunt designed to regain public attention for the station.
“We did that to attract attention, and it worked. We wanted to bring the radio station back to where it was and remind people why we are NRG. Although I still have a big office, I am actually the Head of Brand at NRG,” she clarified.
Despite her success in radio, Kamene has her eyes set on academia. She revealed that she aspires to become a lecturer, leveraging her extensive academic background, which includes a degree and 16 diplomas.
She concluded by advising aspiring radio personalities to maintain discipline, honesty, and a passion for storytelling, emphasizing that reading is crucial to staying knowledgeable and engaging listeners effectively.
