Mariah Carey may be one of the most iconic voices in music history, but at home, she admits her children aren’t necessarily her biggest fans. The 56-year-old superstar revealed that her 14-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, whom she shares with former husband Nick Cannon, prefer modern pop stars over their mother’s legendary catalog.
Speaking to The Sun’s Bizarre column, Carey confessed: “Sometimes I hold back from playing my songs to my kids as they have their own taste. Roe loves Olivia Rodrigo, and Roc loves Sabrina Carpenter.” Despite her chart-topping hits and timeless ballads, the singer accepts that her children are simply following their own musical interests.
Carey, however, has her own exciting project in the works. Her 16th studio album, Here For It All, is set to drop on September 26, marking her first full release in seven years. While she has kept many of the details closely guarded, she offered fans a few intriguing hints. “We might have a duet with Anderson .Paak. It’s like a Seventies R’n’B vibe. It’s funky,” Carey teased. She also hinted that more remixes could be part of the final tracklist.
The Grammy-winning star shared that the project came together gradually. “I was working on some new songs then I was like, ‘OK, I have four songs. That’s cool, what are we going to do?’ Finally, when we got to around six songs, I said, ‘I think we can make this into an album’. I have a good amount of songs though. I don’t really let anyone listen to them until they are done, that’s kind of the way it works for me.”
As for whether she will take her new music on the road, Carey is keeping expectations measured. “We will have to see about that. It is the 16th record. I am happy about that,” she said.
With her unmatched legacy and a new body of work on the horizon, Carey proves that even if her kids prefer the latest pop sensations, she continues to shape the soundscape of music in her own way.
