The age-old rivalry between Marvel and DC Comics has flared up once again as two of their blockbuster superhero films Fantastic Four: First Steps and Superman compete for box office supremacy. With fans crowding theaters to support their favourite characters, the showdown has sparked lively debates reminiscent of comic shop arguments spanning over 80 years.
Marvel’s Fantastic Four, which stars Pedro Pascal and features the iconic line “It’s clobbering time!” from The Thing, has been eagerly anticipated by fans. Early figures show a promising start, with $24.4 million earned on its Thursday night debut in the U.S. and Canada. Box office analysts predict an opening weekend haul between $115 million and $135 million domestically.
Meanwhile, DC’s Superman, released on July 11 and starring David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel, has already grossed $173 million globally and $264 million domestically. Directed by James Gunn, the film marks a significant step in DC’s cinematic reboot. Gunn, who previously directed Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, is now co-CEO of DC Studios and is spearheading a new era for the franchise with upcoming films like Supergirl and Swamp Thing.
At San Diego Comic-Con, fans voiced their allegiance with passion—and a touch of nostalgia. Marvel fan Danielle Stroski, dressed as Mystique from the X-Men, predicted Fantastic Four would outperform Superman, though she admitted to a soft spot for Superman’s dog, Krypto. On the other hand, DC loyalist Lito Loza, dressed as Superboy, praised Gunn’s hopeful vision for the film, saying he’s already watched it three times.
Despite the rivalry, both directors called for unity among fans. Fantastic Four director Matt Shakman expressed admiration for Superman, while Gunn acknowledged his love for both comic worlds.
As both films captivate audiences worldwide, the latest Marvel vs. DC battle is proving to be a win for superhero lovers everywhere. Whether you’re Team Marvel or Team DC, one thing is certain there’s never been a better time to be a comic book fan.
