The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has strongly condemned the violent assault and robbery of journalists from TV47, Citizen TV, and Standard Group during the homecoming of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 21, along Mombasa Road as Gachagua’s convoy returned from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
According to MCK, several journalists were injured, with some requiring hospital treatment, while vital equipment, including cameras and mobile phones, was stolen. The council described the attacks as a blatant assault on press freedom and called upon the Inspector General of Police to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Cape Media Limited reported that their TV47 crew was attacked at City Cabanas while covering the event. Unidentified individuals reportedly injured the journalists and seized critical equipment. “We strongly condemn this blatant attack on press freedom and call on authorities to swiftly investigate this incident and ensure the safety of all journalists legally covering this and other events,” said Macharia Wamugo, Head of TV at TV47.
The chaos erupted as Gachagua’s convoy passed through the City Cabanas stage, where groups of youths reportedly hurled stones. Witnesses added that several unidentified individuals on motorcycles joined in, escalating the situation. The disruption forced Gachagua and other leaders to take cover as the convoy struggled to navigate through the scene.
Former Chief Justice David Maraga also denounced the acts of violence, emphasizing that freedom of the press and the right of citizens to assemble are constitutionally guaranteed and must be protected. “I strongly condemn the use of violence against citizens and journalists during the return of the former Deputy President from his visit to the United States,” Maraga stated.
The Media Council reiterated that such attacks undermine press freedom and democratic principles, stressing the urgent need for authorities to ensure the safety of journalists during public events. The council urged swift action to investigate the assaults and hold those responsible accountable, reaffirming that the media plays a critical role in informing the public and upholding democracy.
