Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has formally issued a demand letter to Kameme FM presenters Baby Top and Chef Gathemba following remarks made during a recent broadcast that she deemed defamatory. The move comes shortly after Wamuchomba attended the funeral of Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah’s father—an event that has reportedly heightened political tensions in the Mount Kenya region.
What Sparked the Dispute?
During their show, the radio hosts discussed circulating rumors suggesting that Wamuchomba was an “informer.” Chef Gathemba attempted to define the term on-air, saying an informer is “someone who goes and gathers information and takes it to someone else.” He further referenced speculation that Wamuchomba’s financial contributions at political events had raised questions about her alleged role.
Baby Top added to the discussion by questioning the origins of the rumor, joking that if the MP had such resources, she should share them with others, in line with her name. Both presenters clarified that they were not making direct accusations but discussing claims already circulating in political circles.
Wamuchomba’s Legal Response
Despite those clarifications, Wamuchomba’s legal team deemed the remarks defamatory and harmful to her reputation. The demand letter accused the presenters of amplifying damaging rumors, especially as clips of the segment spread rapidly on TikTok and other social media platforms.
The letter instructed the radio duo to:
- Withdraw the remarks
- Issue a formal public apology
- Refrain from making further defamatory statements about the MP
Her lawyers stressed that while they preferred an amicable resolution, they had “firm and mandatory instructions” to pursue legal action should the demands be ignored.
Mixed Reactions From the Public
The case has divided public opinion. Some Kenyans criticized the radio hosts for fueling rumors about a sitting legislator, calling it irresponsible. Others argued that Wamuchomba’s legal move may be heavy-handed, given the presenters’ insistence that they were merely echoing ongoing chatter.
The controversy underscores the complex relationship between politics and media in Kenya. Politicians remain under constant scrutiny, while media personalities face the challenge of balancing commentary with journalistic responsibility. The speed at which clips spread on social media has also raised questions about how digital platforms amplify sensitive political narratives.
What’s Next?
MP Wamuchomba has stood firm, framing her response as a necessary step to protect her integrity and curb the spread of misinformation. The Kameme FM presenters have yet to issue a public statement on whether they will comply with the demand letter or contest the matter in court.
With both politics and media credibility on the line, the dispute is expected to remain a topic of national debate in the weeks ahead.
