Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has pledged to reward Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi by covering his house rent for three months, recognising his standout performance at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Omondi, whose composure and decisive saves helped Kenya secure a historic 1-0 victory over two-time champions Morocco, has been hailed as one of the tournament’s key performers. His heroics in goal were crucial in keeping a clean sheet and maintaining Kenya’s hopes of advancing in the competition.
Salasya, in a public statement, praised Omondi’s skill and calm under pressure, remarking, “He is very composed and knows his work. I will just gift the goalkeeper; the other players will be gifted by Ruto.” The MP’s decision to single out Omondi underscores the vital role he played in the team’s recent success.
Beyond the immediate gesture, Salasya used the occasion to share his ambitious vision for the future of Kenyan football. Should he win the 2027 presidential election, he vowed to secure binding contracts for all Harambee Stars players, offering them retirement benefits of at least Sh70,000 per month, comprehensive medical coverage, and starting salaries of Sh450,000 per month. He also pledged to seek sponsorships from new manufacturing firms to boost player earnings and welfare.
Salasya likened Omondi’s performance and potential to legendary former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Francis Onyiso and iconic coach Reinhard Fabisch, signalling his belief in the player’s capacity to inspire a new era in Kenyan football.

His pledge comes as President William Ruto also announced significant incentives ahead of Kenya’s crucial group-stage match against Zambia on Sunday, August 17. The President promised Sh2.5 million for each player and technical bench member if Kenya wins the match, an additional Sh1 million bonus if the team progresses beyond the quarter-finals, and a home under the Affordable Housing Programme.
With Kenya riding high on momentum after the Morocco victory, the Harambee Stars face Zambia with renewed confidence, backed by both political goodwill and growing national support. For Omondi, the praise and rewards are a testament to his rising status as one of the country’s brightest footballing talents.
