SportPesa’s newest multi-millionaire, Bonnie Kamau, is still soaking in the reality of winning a staggering Sh424,660,618 in the Mega Jackpot – the first such win since 2018. Speaking during his unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, Kamau shared the emotional and humorous moments that followed his historic windfall.
According to Kamau, his mother’s reaction was both heartwarming and practical. “I did not want to tell her at first,” he admitted. “After she found out, she told me to go on vacation and decide how I want to use my money.” The advice, laced with a mother’s wisdom, came after an emotional moment where she cried upon hearing the life-changing news. “Unajua damu tu… (You know the power of kinship),” Kamau joked.
Before informing his family, the first person Kamau called after receiving the confirmation from SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri was his wife. However, convincing her was no easy task. “She told me to stop joking and hang up the call,” he recalled with a smile. It took three calls before she finally believed him.
Interestingly, this isn’t Kamau’s first taste of jackpot success. He previously won Sh171,000 from SportPesa, though nothing close to this record-shattering amount. Despite the enormous win, Kamau remains grounded, expressing his gratitude to God for the blessing. “God always got me. He is always with me. It is all God,” he said.
Looking ahead, Kamau plans to use part of his winnings to give back to his community. One of his immediate ideas is to drill a borehole to provide clean water for residents back home.
Kamau’s win makes him the fourth SportPesa Mega Jackpot winner and breaks a six-year drought since the last jackpot payout in 2018. His story is a mix of faith, family bonds, and community spirit – a reminder that even life’s most extraordinary moments can be met with humility and generosity.
As Kamau takes his mother’s advice to “go on holiday first,” Kenyans across the country are no doubt inspired by his calm demeanor and commitment to using his good fortune to uplift others.
