Popular Mugithi singer Raj Banema has firmly addressed and dismissed allegations that he was not married to his late partner, Josephine Wairimu. The controversy arose after a woman made claims on social media, stirring online debate just as the family was preparing for Josephine’s burial.
The woman, who identified herself as Abigail Nyaga, claimed to be Josephine’s sister and alleged that Raj and Josephine were never officially married. She also suggested that Banema might have had hidden motives concerning the funds raised by supporters for funeral arrangements. Abigail went as far as to claim that Josephine should not be buried at Banema’s home, stating there were no legal ties between them.
Visibly affected by the controversy, Raj Banema spoke out to clarify the nature of his relationship with Josephine. He maintained that they were indeed husband and wife and had even started a family together. He affirmed that Josephine was the mother of his son, Keith Mario Banema Jr., and her death had deeply shaken him.
Seeking clarity and truth, Banema conducted a personal investigation into Abigail’s claims. Upon reaching out to Josephine’s family, it was revealed that Abigail was not her biological sister. In fact, the family stated that they had no knowledge of her and denied any association with the statements she made online.
To further dispel the misinformation, Banema shared a recorded phone conversation with a woman named Wairimu, who identified herself as Josephine’s cousin. In the recording, Wairimu expressed regret over the misleading information circulating online. She made it clear that the family did not support Abigail’s claims and confirmed that the person spreading the rumours was unknown to them. She added that, after looking into it, they discovered that Abigail was a sister-in-law and not a direct relative.
Banema emphasized that there was no conflict between him and Josephine’s immediate family. He has been closely working with them, particularly with Josephine’s mother and a brother-in-law who is acting as the family spokesperson. Together, they’ve been coordinating the burial and other related arrangements.
He also addressed concerns about the management of contributions made by well-wishers, noting that all funds collected would be officially handed over to the family at their home in Nyahururu. He was transparent about the process and reiterated his commitment to using the resources appropriately and respectfully.
Regarding the burial location, Raj Banema stated that after discussions with Josephine’s family, they jointly agreed to follow cultural customs and have her laid to rest at her parental home. This decision, he said, was reached peacefully and in accordance with tradition.
Amid the circulating drama, Banema remained focused on honouring his wife’s memory and ensuring she receives a respectful and dignified farewell. As the date of the burial draws near, he continues to lean on the support of family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
In a separate, emotional moment, a previous video of Banema resurfaced in which he opened up about his children during a past radio interview. In it, he revealed that he is a father of two and, in a heartbreaking admission, shared that he had earlier lost a daughter — a personal tragedy that resonated with many fans.
