A vintage gem is set to grace the grounds of the Nairobi Racecourse this September as a rare 1930 Essex Super Six makes its first-ever appearance at the Africa Concours d’Elegance. Entered by classic car enthusiast Mike Duder, the Essex will mark a milestone as the first of its kind to feature in the long-running event’s history.
Scheduled for Sunday, September 28, 2025, the Concours d’Elegance will once again showcase Africa’s finest vintage and classic automobiles. Stanbic Bank and SGA Security Group have already been confirmed as key partners for the event, though organizers have indicated that partnership opportunities remain available for other interested sponsors.
Manufactured by the Hudson Motor Car Company in Michigan, USA, the Essex was produced until 1933 and played a significant role in the evolution of the automobile. At a time when most cars were open touring models, the Essex was among the first to offer an affordable enclosed body. This innovation shifted public demand towards more comfortable, weather-proof cars, making it a pioneer in modern passenger car design.
Although Henry Ford is widely credited with revolutionizing car affordability through mass production, it was Essex that democratized the enclosed car experience. Its influence was profound, offering middle-class families a taste of luxury and practicality previously reserved for wealthier buyers.
The 1930 Essex Super Six entered by Duder is believed to be the only remaining example in Kenya and one of the few left on the African continent. Its appearance at the Concours is expected to draw significant attention from automotive historians and vintage car enthusiasts alike.
The Africa Concours d’Elegance, organized by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club, is recognized by FIM Africa as a premier classic car and motorcycle competition. The inclusion of such a rare and historically significant vehicle further elevates the event’s prestige.
With anticipation building for this year’s show, the debut of the Essex Super Six adds an exciting chapter to the Concours legacy one that blends history, elegance, and automotive innovation.
