President William Ruto’s recent directive instructing police officers to shoot looters in the legs during protests has sparked a firestorm of reactions across the country. While the statement stirred debate among political commentators and human rights groups, a different kind of response took center stage online—one that only Kenya’s Gen Z could deliver. Rather than reacting with fear or anger alone, young Kenyans responded with humour, satire, and an infectious new dance trend that’s taking social media by storm.
The directive, issued during a national address on July 9, was meant to deter vandalism and looting during demonstrations. The president stated that anyone caught destroying property during protests should be shot in the leg to incapacitate them, then taken to hospital for treatment, and later arraigned in court. The tough stance was meant to restore law and order and protect business owners affected by repeated demonstrations.
But instead of being cowed, Gen Z found a creative way to flip the narrative. A viral video filmed at a university event captured students performing a new dance dubbed “Risasi Ya Mguu,” or “Bullet to the Leg.” Set to a catchy beat, the dance features exaggerated limping movements and coordinated steps meant to mimic someone who has been shot in the leg—delivered with full energy, humour, and unapologetic satire.
The video quickly gained traction online, with thousands of shares across platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). In the clip, students can be seen hyping each other up while the crowd joins in, embracing the absurdity of the moment with laughter and unity. The beat drops, and the dance floor fills with participants limping in unison, creatively turning a grim threat into a moment of joy and national commentary.
Online, the trend expanded far beyond the original video. Memes flooded social media, with phrases like “one lege” becoming shorthand for the dance and the entire situation. AI-generated images depicted scenes of youth with crutches, bandaged legs, and even entire protest crowds in wheelchairs, carrying placards and still voicing their discontent—this time, through art and comedy.
Some clips even showed solo dancers hopping on one leg in exaggerated fashion, portraying a version of the future where “limping” is the new mode of celebration. Many praised the creativity, noting that while the underlying issue is serious, the response reflected a unique Kenyan ability to use humour to highlight injustice and speak truth to power.
The dance has since become more than just a trend; it’s a statement. It showcases how a generation can absorb political tension and express its frustration through music, art, and laughter—turning fear into a cultural moment.
