Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has intensified his ongoing dispute with Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, challenging the MP’s popular online mathematics tutorials for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates. The conflict centers on Alai’s claim of superior mathematical ability and his criticism of MPs engaging in basic education initiatives.
Alai Highlights Academic Credentials
In a series of social media posts, Alai shared his KCSE result slip, which shows he attended Lela Mixed Secondary School and scored A- (Minus) in Mathematics with 121 marks during the November/December 1998 exams. He also earned B+ grades in Kiswahili and History and Government, culminating in an overall mean grade of B- (Minus).
Alai emphasized his advanced education, including studies in Computer Science at USIU and ongoing work toward a Master’s in Data Analytics. He used these credentials to assert that his level of mathematics expertise surpasses that of Owino and others hosting online tutorials.
Criticism of Babu Owino’s Online Lessons
Alai directly criticized Owino, who has been widely praised for conducting live Maths and Chemistry revision sessions for students since the COVID-19 pandemic. Alai argued that MPs should prioritize core legislative functions such as debating, sponsoring bills, and representing constituents over teaching basic school subjects.
“My work is NOT to stream live basic Maths lessons. My level of Mathematics is beyond the level of Patel and even his 20 associates. I live and eat maths,” Alai wrote. He further dismissed public admiration for Owino’s efforts as misplaced, suggesting that focusing on such initiatives reflects poor leadership priorities.
Debate Over Leadership Priorities
Alai framed the confrontation as a broader discussion about the responsibilities of elected officials. He questioned Owino’s effectiveness in parliament, stating that the MP “can’t debate, sponsor a motion, bill, or even a statement on the floor of national parliament,” and urged Kenyans to elect leaders who prioritize governance over personal publicity.
Public Reaction and Implications
The exchange has sparked discussions online about the role of politicians in public education versus legislative duties, with some praising Owino’s tutorials for benefiting students, while others echo Alai’s concern over leadership focus. The feud highlights tensions between public service initiatives and perceived professional responsibilities in political office.
