President William Ruto has issued a passionate call to all Kenyans to turn up in large numbers and support Harambee Stars as the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off. Kenya is co-hosting the tournament alongside regional neighbors Tanzania and Uganda, with the games set to run until August 30.
In a selfie video taken on the pitch at Kasarani Stadium, President Ruto energized the nation, saying, “Kenyans, are you ready for the biggest football celebration in Africa? We are hosting CHAN 2024. We’ve got passion, we’ve got the players, now we need the 12th man – you! Kuja na mbogi, ama niaje?”
Kenya’s Harambee Stars, placed in Group A, will play their first match on Sunday at 3 pm against the Democratic Republic of Congo at the iconic Kasarani Stadium. They are grouped alongside strong contenders Zambia, Morocco, and Angola.
President Ruto had earlier met the national team at Upper Hill before heading to Kasarani. In his message, he emphasized patriotism and unity, encouraging fans to back the team both on and off the field. To sweeten the motivation, he promised substantial cash rewards: Sh600 million for winning the tournament, Sh70 million for reaching the semifinals, and Sh60 million for a quarterfinal finish. Each player will also receive Sh1 million for every win and Sh500,000 for every draw.
As the tournament begins, excitement is building across the country. The opening match in Group B between Tanzania and Burkina Faso will take place Saturday at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has urged fans to arrive early at Kasarani on Sunday to avoid delays due to road closures and heavy traffic. With a sold-out crowd expected, fans are advised to make advance travel plans to enjoy the game without hassle.
As the region prepares for a month-long football celebration, the message from President Ruto is clear: Support Harambee Stars – and don’t come alone. Kuja na mbogi!
