Raila Odinga’s adopted son, Salah Oketch, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Prime Minister, describing him as a loving and courageous father whose influence shaped his life. The emotional message came days after Raila’s passing in India, where Oketch had accompanied him during his final days.
In a touching reflection, Oketch remembered Raila as a man of unmatched resilience and compassion.
“For today, we are mourning mzee. The rest will be shared at the burial because I am also part of the family,” he said. “Baba was a courageous and bold man, a loving father. His body is evidence of his journey — like we say in Dholuo, pien rao, meaning the skin of a hippopotamus, which has seen many things. The scars of politics he bore tell his story.”
Remembering a Hero of Democracy
Oketch noted that Raila’s strength and endurance were a testament to his lifelong dedication to Kenya’s struggle for democracy and equality. He added that many people who once opposed Raila now understood the depth of his legacy following his death.
“Baba was a hero in Kenya, in Africa, and across the world,” Oketch said. “He has left a gap that no one can fill. I only hope that people will honour his memory and carry forward what he stood for.”
Speaking in fluent Dholuo, Oketch urged Raila’s supporters to remain calm and united as the nation prepared to lay the statesman to rest. He appealed for a peaceful and dignified send-off befitting the man who had given so much to his people.
Messages of Support and Love
Social media was flooded with messages of sympathy and admiration for Oketch, with many commending his courage and the bond he shared with Raila.
“This is my guy; he kept Baba entertained until the last minute,” one user wrote.
Another added, “Oketch is brave. May he find comfort — it’s not easy losing someone you’ve spent so much time with.”
Family Tributes to Raila Odinga
Raila’s family also shared their own moving tributes. His granddaughter spoke tenderly about her grandfather’s kindness and wisdom, while his daughter Rosemary Odinga reflected on his deep understanding and love for his family. Winnie Odinga revealed that her father died in her arms, calling their final moments together “the most difficult yet sacred experience.”
Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga, celebrated their more than five decades of marriage, describing her late husband as her best friend and confidant. She urged Kenyans to follow his example of forgiveness and humility, reminding the nation that Raila’s spirit of peace and perseverance must continue to guide them.
