The family of the late Shalkido Gacucu, former member of the renowned Sailors Gang music group, has officially confirmed the dates and venues for his requiem mass and burial. The beloved Gengetone artist, whose untimely death earlier this month left fans and fellow entertainers heartbroken, will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at his family home in Matangi, Ruiru.
Requiem Mass Set for October 15
A requiem mass will take place a day earlier, on Wednesday, October 15, at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The service is expected to draw hundreds of mourners from the entertainment industry, friends, and family members who have continued to celebrate the artist’s life and legacy.
Comedian Eric Omondi has urged members of Kenya’s creative community to attend the service, emphasizing the importance of unity during such moments of loss. He described Shalkido as a young talent whose life was tragically cut short, calling on colleagues to honor his contribution to the music scene.
A Life Cut Short
Shalkido’s passing has left a deep void in Kenya’s music industry. He rose to fame as part of the popular Sailors Gang, known for their hit songs that defined the Gengetone era and inspired many young artists. Colleagues remember him for his infectious energy, humility, and passion for his craft.
The tragic accident occurred on October 5 along Thika Road, between Githurai and Carwash near Roysambu. Shalkido was riding a motorcycle involved in a collision, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) and placed under intensive care.
Despite medical efforts, Shalkido succumbed to his injuries after being declared brain-dead due to severe internal bleeding. His death sent shockwaves through the Kenyan entertainment industry, prompting tributes from musicians, comedians, and fans across social media.
Preparations for a Dignified Farewell
Preparations for the burial are now underway, with friends and industry colleagues assisting the family to ensure a respectful and dignified farewell. The funeral is expected to be an emotional event, celebrating Shalkido’s short yet impactful career and the joy he brought to millions through his music.
