A woman recently received a heartfelt apology from a stranger who had body-shamed her two years ago. The individual, reflecting on their actions, admitted to making an insensitive comment under one of her videos in 2023—telling her to “eat and add some weight.” At the time, she had responded with wit, replying, “I could eat on your behalf,” but beneath the surface, she was fighting a silent battle with endometriosis.
The condition, which often causes intense pain and weight loss, was something the commenter knew nothing about until she later spoke about it publicly. Upon learning about her health struggles, the person was overwhelmed with guilt. For two years, the memory of that single comment lingered in their conscience. Every time they saw her posts, they were reminded of the harm caused by what they once thought was a harmless joke.
In the emotional message shared recently, the individual admitted that their remark was rooted in ignorance and lacked empathy. They took full responsibility, acknowledging how their words—though not intended to hurt—had likely added to the burden she was already carrying. “What was meant as a light joke was, in hindsight, deeply insensitive and uninformed,” the message read. They also expressed admiration for her strength, praising her openness and the courage it took to speak about her experience.
In response, she accepted the apology with grace and empathy. “Apology accepted and sending you love wherever you are,” she wrote. But beyond forgiveness, she used the opportunity to educate others about the importance of kindness. “Always be kind to people. Everyone is battling something. Some share, others don’t. And even if someone isn’t going through anything, still be kind,” she urged.
She further appreciated the fact that the person took time to reflect on their behaviour. Using humour, she said, “Napenda vile alijiita kamkutano na waka agree that whatever they did was wrong,” which translates to appreciating how the person called a ‘meeting’ with themselves and came to terms with their mistake.
Despite the positive outcome, she didn’t shy away from addressing the wider issue. She revealed that body-shaming is still a common experience for her. In fact, she recently had to block a male stand-up comedian who made fun of her body in a comment, even laughing about it. Though she did not name him, she made it clear that such remarks are not welcome, regardless of who they come from.
Through it all, she chose to highlight the need for empathy, reflection, and accountability. The incident served as a reminder that words matter, even when delivered in jest. And sometimes, the courage to apologise—no matter how late—can lead to healing on both sides.
