The Kenyan media fraternity is mourning the loss of veteran investigative journalist Kurgat Maridany, who passed away after a long and distinguished career in journalism. Until his death, Maridany served as the Editor-in-Chief of Kajiado News Update, where he continued to shape stories and mentor young reporters.
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) led tributes to the veteran journalist, describing him as a dedicated professional who embodied integrity, curiosity, and a steadfast commitment to truth.
“The Media Council of Kenya joins the family, friends and entire media fraternity in mourning the passing of Kurgat Maridany, a veteran investigative journalist,” the Council said in a statement, praising his immense contribution to the profession.
Maridany’s career spanned several decades and included stints at some of the country’s leading media houses. He worked with the Daily Nation, The Star, Kenya Times, and The Standard, as well as internationally with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). His reputation as a fearless investigative journalist earned him admiration across the industry.
Before embarking on his media journey, Maridany served in the public sector as a senior librarian in charge of the Garissa Area Library, a position he held for 11 years. His transition from government service to journalism reflected his passion for storytelling and dedication to informing the public.
Colleagues and friends described him as a gifted storyteller with a unique ability to connect with people. His warmth, humility, and professionalism left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.
“His passion for storytelling and his warmth towards everyone he encountered left a lasting impression,” MCK’s statement added.
The Council further expressed solidarity with his family, noting that his passing was not only a personal loss to them but also a significant loss to Kenya’s media industry.
Maridany will be remembered as a trailblazer who inspired generations of journalists through his commitment to truth and fairness. His legacy of integrity and professionalism will continue to influence the craft for years to come.
