– Kenyan content creator and actress Wanjiku Stephens has voiced concerns over persistent challenges affecting the ongoing voter registration exercise, questioning whether authorities are ensuring citizens can register without obstacles.
Flagged Content and Social Media Concerns
In a video shared on 22 October 2025, Stephens noted that older posts encouraging voter registration had been flagged as “ineligible for recommendation” on social media platforms. She questioned whether the government was genuinely engaging young voters. “Jana nilikua na scroll video zangu za kitambo, and there is a video nilifanya nikiwaambia go register as a voter. That video has been termed as ineligible to be recommended. I found another one on the same topic—same issue. Why?” she asked.
Technical Failures at Registration Centres
Stephens also reported that followers who visited voter registration stations she had shared found no activity. “There are people writing to me saying they’ve gone to voter registration stations I indicated through my links, but there’s nothing going on. Hakuna watu, wanakuambia system iko chini,” she said. Technical failures and offline systems at multiple centres are preventing eligible citizens from registering on time.
Call for Government Action
Highlighting growing public frustration, Stephens urged the government to extend the voter registration period to accommodate those affected by glitches and staffing issues. “I think the best thing to do is extend the registration period. Come on, give us a break,” she said, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
Ensuring Inclusive Electoral Participation
Stephens’ concerns come amid nationwide reports of long queues, offline systems, and understaffed registration stations. By speaking out, she underscores the importance of an efficient and accessible voter registration process, ensuring all eligible citizens can exercise their democratic right without undue barriers.
