Media personality Willis Raburu has made it clear that he would only consider returning to mainstream television or radio if offered a salary exceeding KSh 1 million. The former Citizen TV journalist, who left the network two years ago, says his focus has shifted toward creating opportunities for other creatives through his independent venture, Wabebe Experience.
From Citizen TV to Independent Creator
Raburu spent over 13 years at Citizen TV before announcing his departure in June 2023. At the time, he said the decision was driven by a desire for personal growth and more family time. Soon after, he enrolled at USIU-Africa for a Master’s degree in Strategic Communication and Development.
Just two months later, Raburu joined TV47, where he hosted a revamped version of Wabebe Experience — a show dedicated to spotlighting Kenya’s emerging creative talents. However, his time at the station was short-lived; he stepped away in April 2024 after only nine months.
Empowering Others Through Wabebe Experience
In a recent interview, Raburu said his current mission is less about being in front of the camera and more about empowering others to thrive. Through Wabebe Experience, he provides a space for rising artists, storytellers, and innovators to showcase their work while exploring new ways to blend digital storytelling with traditional entertainment.
When asked if he would consider returning to radio or television, Raburu responded candidly: “If I feel the urge to come back and run the show, I will — but it has to be a really different show.” He added, “If there is anyone who can pay me over KSh 1 million, then we can talk. But for now, my eyes have seen the glory.”
Focus on Value and Freedom
Raburu’s comments reflect a growing trend among Kenyan media personalities who are leaving traditional networks to pursue creative independence and ownership of content. His bold stance on compensation highlights the ongoing conversation about fair pay, experience, and value in Kenya’s entertainment and media industry.
Beyond his media projects, Raburu remains an active and engaging figure on social media, often interacting with fans and sharing insights on entertainment, motivation, and personal growth. Recently, he went viral after posting about a lost phone — an appeal that ultimately led to its recovery.
A Pioneer of Modern Kenyan Media
Willis Raburu’s evolution from a TV anchor to an independent media entrepreneur illustrates the changing landscape of Kenyan broadcasting — one that increasingly rewards authenticity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit. His journey serves as a reminder that for seasoned creators, success is no longer just about the spotlight, but about building platforms that uplift others.
