The African Development Bank (AfDB) has appointed Dr. Alex Mubiru as the Country Manager Designate for Kenya, effective May 1, 2025. In this pivotal role, Dr. Mubiru will oversee the bank’s operations, project implementation, and stakeholder engagement across more than a dozen countries in Eastern Africa, aligning efforts with AfDB’s ambitious 10-Year Strategy.
Dr. Mubiru’s appointment comes at a critical time as the bank manages an expansive regional portfolio valued at $16.8 billion, consisting of 314 active operations. His deep understanding of AfDB’s institutional framework and strong track record in delivering impactful development outcomes make him a strategic choice for the role.
“Alex’s extensive experience within the Bank, his deep institutional knowledge, and his personal leadership style make him an invaluable asset at this critical juncture,” said AfDB President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina. “His strategic insight and ability to drive results will be instrumental in streamlining initiatives, overseeing program management, and effectively engaging with partners and beneficiaries.”
Dr. Mubiru joined AfDB in 2009 and has since served in various senior roles, including Principal Research Economist, Principal Country Economist, and Lead Strategy & Operational Policies Advisor. He has also held leadership positions as Division Manager for Resource Mobilization & Sovereign Partnerships, Country Manager for Tanzania, Director of Strategy & Delivery in the President’s Cabinet, and most recently, Director General of the Cabinet Office of the President.
With over 25 years of experience in international development, Dr. Mubiru brings a wealth of expertise and a collaborative approach to leadership. “Leading the Bank’s work in Eastern Africa is a significant responsibility, and I am committed to working with our dedicated teams and partners to drive impactful development outcomes,” he stated.
Dr. Mubiru holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics from Macalester College, as well as dual master’s degrees in Public Affairs and Urban & Regional Planning, and a PhD in Public Affairs from Princeton University.
His appointment signals AfDB’s continued commitment to fostering inclusive growth and regional integration in Eastern Africa.
