The National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has launched a vigorous campaign to counter misinformation surrounding genetically modified organisms (GMOs), particularly targeting farmers and consumers who remain skeptical about their safety and benefits. The initiative is part of the Authority’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027, which prioritizes public education and awareness, regulatory compliance, and policy development in biosafety.
NBA Chairman Prof. Jenesio Kinyamario emphasized the importance of decentralizing services to better reach the public. “The Authority has accelerated the decentralization of its services to regions such as Mombasa, Busia, Namanga, Malaba, Lunga Lunga, and Taita Taveta. We look forward to opening six more border offices during the current Strategic Plan period,” he said.
The awareness campaign kicked off in Machakos County and aims to inform the public on critical aspects of biosafety, including international partnerships, implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, and biosafety information management. The campaign also highlights operational improvements and human resource development as part of a broader effort to enhance institutional efficiency.
As the national body mandated to regulate the transfer, handling, and use of GMOs, NBA’s core role is to ensure that the introduction and application of GMOs do not compromise human and animal health or the environment. “This is achieved through the application of both international and national standards on safety assessments,” explained NBA Chief Executive Officer Nehemiah Ngetich.
The Authority is guided by a strong regulatory framework that includes the Biosafety Act, Biotechnology Policy, and various biosafety regulations, in addition to international protocols. Its efforts are geared towards fostering informed public discourse, building trust, and ensuring transparent risk assessment and management of GMOs.
With increased public engagement, regional presence, and collaborative partnerships, NBA is working to dismantle myths about GMOs and advocate for science-based understanding of biotechnology in agriculture and environmental management. The Authority’s ongoing campaign is a critical step toward building confidence in regulated GMO use, ultimately contributing to food security and sustainable development.
