Ride-hailing platform Bolt has rolled out a new dash cam initiative in Kenya, in partnership with U.S.-based AI mobility technology firm Driver Technologies, to enhance safety for both drivers and passengers. The move makes Kenya the first market where Bolt is introducing this solution, giving driver-partners access to premium dash cam features at a fraction of the cost.
Through the partnership, Bolt drivers will receive a free one-month trial of the premium dash cam app. After that, they can continue using it at a 75% discounted rate of KES 386 per month. The app allows drivers to turn their smartphones into forward-facing and interior-facing dash cameras, running in the background with a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode that ensures recording without interfering with the Bolt app.
“Driver partners frequently share that dash cams provide not only enhanced security and peace of mind, but also greater accountability in their trips. Unfortunately, the cost of acquiring a reliable device has often been a barrier,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, General Manager, Rides at Bolt. “This collaboration addresses that challenge, empowering drivers with affordable safety tools that improve trust, clarify incidents, and enhance accountability.”
The recordings, stored securely, can be used to support drivers and passengers in disputes, accident investigations, or insurance claims. Bolt emphasized that while installation is optional, dash cams are in drivers’ best interests, particularly in cases where incidents are reduced to conflicting accounts.
The initiative builds on Bolt’s existing in-app safety toolkit, which already includes Rider Verification, Trusted Contacts, and pick-up codes. The company said these investments respond to long-standing safety concerns in Kenya, where drivers have often reported harassment, theft, and attacks.
For Driver Technologies, the partnership signals an expansion into emerging markets, with the company set to provide IT support and data management services for Kenyan drivers.
With operations in over 50 countries and 600 cities worldwide, Bolt serves more than 200 million lifetime customers and is supported by over 4.5 million drivers globally. The introduction of dash cams in Kenya demonstrates the platform’s continued commitment to safety and accountability in its growing African market.
