The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has revoked licenses belonging to 155 service providers in the country’s communications sector. The decision was announced in a gazette notice dated October 16, with the revocations set to take effect seven days from the date of publication.
According to the notice, once the seven-day period lapses, the affected service providers will no longer be authorized to operate or offer services within Kenya.
“Notice is given pursuant to the provisions of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, that the Communications Authority of Kenya shall revoke the licences of the following service providers within seven (7) days from the date of this Gazette Notice,” the statement read in part.
The Authority explained that once the licenses are revoked, all resources held under these licenses will revert to the CA. The affected entities operate across three major categories in the communications sector:
- 58 Application Service Providers (ASPs)
- 19 Network Facilities Providers (NFPs)
- 78 Content Service Providers (CSPs)
In addition to the revocations, the Authority also revealed that six companies have applied for new commercial communication licenses. These applications were submitted in accordance with the Kenya Information and Communications Act.
The CA invited members of the public to submit any objections or representations concerning these applications. Individuals or groups wishing to raise concerns were advised to send written submissions to the Authority’s official address within the specified period.
This move underscores the CA’s ongoing efforts to enforce compliance and maintain integrity within Kenya’s rapidly evolving ICT sector. It follows a similar recent announcement where the Authority signaled intentions to revoke licenses of 42 television stations that failed to meet regulatory obligations.
