Tension gripped Kihoto Estate in Naivasha Town on Thursday, November 6, 2025, after chaos erupted during Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika’s visit to the flood-affected area. The governor, who had been assessing the damage caused by rising water levels from Lake Naivasha, was forced to flee to safety after violence broke out moments after addressing residents.
Governor Kihika was accompanied by senior county officials as she inspected the flooded estate, which has left hundreds of families displaced. In her address, she assured residents that her administration would facilitate transportation for those returning to their homes and provide financial assistance for fare.
However, the situation quickly turned chaotic when a group of unruly youths began attacking people in an attempt to reach the governor. Bodyguards swiftly shielded Kihika, escorting her away from the scene amid rising tension.
During the confrontation, two vehicles a private car and a trailer parked along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway were set ablaze. Police officers at the scene struggled to control the crowd and were forced to fire shots in the air to disperse the attackers. The governor’s convoy was also pelted with stones before she was safely evacuated.
Earlier, Kihika had announced plans to deploy more tippers, lorries, and boats to assist in evacuating residents whose homes had been submerged. She noted that more than 2,000 people had already been rescued from the affected areas.
To improve coordination of rescue efforts, the governor unveiled a multi-agency committee comprising county government officials, National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), and members of the clergy.
The incident highlights the growing frustration among residents displaced by the floods, as calls intensify for lasting solutions to the recurring rise in Lake Naivasha’s water levels.
