A major step towards unlocking Baringo County’s mineral wealth is underway as Chinese firm Chuanshan International receives the green light to begin mining operations in Tiaty constituency starting July. The company has been granted a mining license to extract diatomite, marking the first significant mining investment in the region.
Speaking during a meeting with local leaders and residents on Saturday, Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho officially introduced the company, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting genuine investors in the extractive sector.
“As a government, we keep our doors open to genuine investors in the mining sector who prioritize the welfare of the communities where they extract minerals,” Joho stated. “I have today launched the first mining company in Tiaty for the exploitation of diatomite as part of our commitment to fostering resource-based industrial development.”
Tiaty is known to possess a wealth of untapped minerals including diatomite, fluorspar, and rubies. Joho noted that if sustainably harnessed, these natural resources could transform the lives of the local population and contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The entry of Chuanshan International into Baringo’s mining landscape is expected to bring tangible economic benefits. According to the Mining CS, the company is projected to create over 250 skilled jobs for locals and enhance foreign exchange earnings through the export of diatomite.
In addition to economic gains, the company has pledged to invest in development projects that will uplift the standards of living for the surrounding communities. This includes infrastructural development, education support, and other social initiatives.
The event was attended by a host of dignitaries including Mining Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai, Tiaty MP William Kamket, and Baringo Woman Representative Flowrence Jematiah, who welcomed the investment as a timely boost to the region’s economic prospects.
As Chuanshan International sets up its operations in Tiaty, the government hopes this will be a model for how public-private partnerships can be harnessed to spur rural development through responsible and community-focused mining.Baringo Diatomite
