The Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), Francis Atwoli, has praised China as a sincere and committed development partner for Africa. Speaking in the wake of President William Ruto’s recent state visit to Beijing, Atwoli emphasized the growing importance of Kenya’s strategic partnership with the world’s second-largest economy.
Atwoli lauded the long-standing cooperation between COTU and Chinese trade union federations, describing the Chinese people as “genuine” in their support for Africa. “Your Excellency, the majority of Chinese people are genuine and support Africa genuinely,” he remarked while addressing President Ruto. He commended the President for strengthening bilateral relations during his recent trip, noting that such diplomacy yields tangible benefits for the Kenyan people.
Among the major outcomes of President Ruto’s visit were agreements on key infrastructure projects, including the construction of a dual carriageway from Nairobi to Western Kenya and the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). Atwoli expressed optimism that these projects—especially the SGR—would significantly ease transportation challenges and stimulate economic activity.
China’s cooperation with Africa is guided by the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), a framework for comprehensive engagement covering areas such as infrastructure development, trade, industrialization, healthcare, digital innovation, and environmental sustainability. FOCAC has been instrumental in facilitating China’s investment in Africa’s modernization and capacity-building efforts.
Highlighting Beijing’s growing role on the continent, China has pledged a substantial $50 billion financial package. This includes concessional loans, development assistance, and direct investments aimed at supporting Africa’s development agenda. The package aligns with the continent’s vision of achieving sustainable development, industrial growth, and digital transformation.
Atwoli reiterated that African countries stand to gain immensely from deepening ties with China, particularly when such partnerships are based on mutual respect and practical cooperation. He concluded by expressing hope that Kenya’s collaboration with China would not only boost infrastructure but also improve the livelihoods of Kenyan workers and communities across the country.
As Africa seeks partners to drive its development ambitions, China’s approach continues to resonate with leaders and institutions keen on delivering inclusive growth.
