Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has called on all public servants to wear Harambee Stars jerseys throughout August in support of Kenya’s national football team during the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Speaking during a church service on Sunday, CS Ruku said the initiative is aimed at fostering national unity, boosting team morale, and demonstrating patriotism as Kenya hosts the continental tournament at Kasarani Stadium.
“Our country is privileged to host a continental occasion. Kenya has welcomed all African nations for CHAN,” Ruku stated. “For us to support our national team, I urge all public servants to wear the Harambee Stars jersey in their offices throughout August.”
He clarified that the call applies to public servants who can afford to purchase the jerseys and does not extend to uniformed officers in the police and military. However, it includes staff from ministries, county governments, the Judiciary, and constitutional commissions.
“This is a moment for us to stand as one people, not divided by tribe, politics, or religion, but united as Kenyans,” Ruku emphasized. “From the President and Deputy President to Cabinet Secretaries and other public servants, let us don the Harambee Stars jersey and show our support.”
Ruku expressed confidence that such symbolic acts would inspire the national team to push forward and aim for the CHAN finals.
The campaign began on a high note, with Harambee Stars securing a 1-0 victory against two-time CHAN champions, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Austin Odhiambo scored the decisive goal just before halftime, sending the home crowd at Kasarani into a frenzy and lifting the spirits of millions watching across the nation.
The goal not only marked an impressive start for Kenya’s Group A campaign but also underscored the importance of national support during the tournament. As the country rallies behind the team, CS Ruku’s jersey initiative adds a patriotic touch to Kenya’s journey through the CHAN championship.
