Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development, Alice Wahome, has praised the Lumumba Affordable Housing Project in Kisumu, calling it a symbol of hope, dignity, and opportunity for Kenyans.
Speaking during a tour of the site on Thursday, Wahome described the development as a shining example of the government’s Affordable Housing Programme in action “transformational, inclusive, and visionary.”
“This project is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about restoring dignity, creating opportunity, and building a future where every Kenyan has access to decent, affordable housing,” she said. “What we are witnessing here in Kisumu is the true spirit of the Affordable Housing Programme.”
Launched in 2024 and set for completion in January 2026, the Lumumba Housing Project will deliver 2,384 modern units in Kisumu Central. These will include 452 social housing units, 1,192 affordable housing units, and 740 market-rate apartments, catering to a diverse range of residents from young professionals to growing families.
The development offers various housing options, from contemporary studio apartments to spacious three-bedroom homes. Wahome highlighted the project as a model of how public-private partnerships, backed by strong political will, can translate ambitious visions into tangible outcomes.
Beyond the residences, the project is designed to foster a vibrant, self-sufficient community. It will feature secure, well-lit streets and guardhouses, family-friendly play areas, a fully equipped clubhouse, and a modern health facility.
To enhance convenience and lifestyle, the plan also includes a shopping mall, an early childhood development (ECD) centre, landscaped walkways, and green spaces. The integration of these amenities, Wahome noted, ensures that the project is not just about shelter, but about improving quality of life and creating a sustainable urban environment.
The Lumumba Housing Project is part of the government’s broader agenda to address Kenya’s housing deficit and promote urban renewal. With its scale, amenities, and inclusivity, it is expected to set a new benchmark for affordable and dignified urban living in the country.
