Del Monte Kenya is quietly revolutionizing farming through sustainable practices that address the harsh realities of climate change. With a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, the company is reshaping agriculture by embracing smart technology, water conservation, and regenerative farming.
At the heart of Del Monte Kenya’s efforts is water essential for life and productivity. In response to Kenya’s erratic weather patterns, the company has heavily invested in modern irrigation systems and expanded dam capacities along the Thika and Athi Rivers. Through precision drip irrigation, which uses 40% less water than traditional methods, Del Monte ensures every drop reaches the plant roots efficiently, even during droughts.
“Every drop of water is precious now,” says Jorge Miranda, Agriculture Operations Director. “We are trying to regenerate—to give back more than we take.”
Beyond water management, Del Monte Kenya has ventured into biofertilizer production. Its innovative biofertilizer plant, built from surplus pineapple residues, transforms waste into eco-friendly nutrients that enhance soil health and crop yields. This project, in partnership with Vellsam Materias Bioactivas under the name De L’Ora Bio, reflects a shift toward circular agriculture and aims to benefit both large-scale and smallholder farmers across East Africa.
Tree planting also plays a vital role in Del Monte’s climate resilience strategy. Over 8,200 trees have been planted to protect riparian zones, stabilize soil, and preserve biodiversity. The initiative aligns with Fresh Del Monte’s global target of 2.5 million trees by 2025 and involves partnerships with local organizations like the Kenya Defence Forces and Waternet.
Del Monte Kenya’s actions go beyond business they represent a holistic philosophy of environmental care and community collaboration. As climate change intensifies, the company’s model offers a blueprint for sustainable agriculture that not only feeds but also heals the planet.
By integrating innovation with ecological responsibility, Del Monte Kenya is sowing the seeds of a greener, more resilient future for Kenyan farming.
