Property worth millions of shillings was reduced to ashes on Thursday night, September 4, 2025, after a massive fire swept through Katani Villas, a gated community in Syokimau, Machakos County.
Residents say the fire broke out around 7:30 pm and spread rapidly through several homes, forcing families to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs. Thick smoke from the blaze was visible as far as Mombasa Road, raising alarm across the neighbourhood.
Emergency responders from both Machakos and Nairobi counties rushed to the scene after distress calls were made. Fire crews, supported by residents, battled the raging flames late into the night. Despite their efforts, several houses were completely destroyed, leaving behind charred shells and families counting heavy losses.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported. Survivors, however, described terrifying moments as they scrambled to salvage valuables and assist neighbours caught up in the chaos. “We were caught completely off guard, but everyone did what they could to help,” one resident recalled.
Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the inferno. Investigations are expected to begin in the coming days, with an official statement on the extent of the destruction still pending.
Katani Villas, located just off Mombasa Road, is a modern residential estate known for its affordability and proximity to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Nairobi’s central business district. The gated community hosts dozens of families, many of whom are now displaced or facing significant losses.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for better fire preparedness in residential estates. Community leaders have urged county governments to invest in faster response systems, more fire stations, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate future disasters.
Emergency teams assured residents that updates will be provided once investigations are complete. In the meantime, the affected families are appealing for assistance as they begin the difficult process of recovery and rebuilding.
