In the heart of Kericho, a young couple is redefining the Jua Kali sector with skill, grit, and ambition. Kevin Okoth, 31, and his wife Hellen Njoka Okoth, 28, have turned their modest carpentry venture into a thriving business, earning at least Sh8,000 daily while empowering fellow youth in their community.
The couple’s journey began four years ago with nothing but raw skill and determination. Okoth learned carpentry through hands-on experience six years ago, while Njoka picked up the trade assisting her father in a local workshop. Combining their expertise, they decided to start a small family-run workshop, specializing in handmade beds, chairs, tables, shoe racks, and painted furniture.
“We started from scratch with only our skills. It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve kept going,” Okoth shared. Their creative designs and attention to customer needs have made their furniture highly sought after.
Their success has allowed them to employ four young people and plan for expansion. Okoth revealed they are in the process of acquiring advanced tools and increasing their workforce to meet the growing demand, especially for sofa sets and beds. “We prefer passionate people who are willing to learn through practical training,” he noted.
Njoka, a woman thriving in the male-dominated carpentry world, shared her challenges, including being underestimated by clients and peers. “Sometimes people don’t take me seriously, but I’ve learned to stay strong and do my best. Now people are gradually appreciating my work,” she said.
Balancing work and home life is crucial for Njoka, who ensures her children are cared for while maintaining high standards at work. “I create time for my family and help with homework. I’ve mastered how to balance work and family time,” she added.
Njoka encourages women and youth to explore the Jua Kali sector, highlighting the fulfillment that comes from independence and hard work.
As they plan to open new branches and fully equip their workshop, the Okoths’ story is a powerful reminder that with skill, perseverance, and partnership, one can build a successful future truly from scratch.
