A wave of frustration swept through Garissa County on Tuesday as a section of residents staged a peaceful protest, demanding urgent government intervention over persistent electricity outages, dilapidated roads, and lack of essential services.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators voiced their anger at what they described as years of neglect by both the national and county governments. The residents said they have endured constant blackouts, which have crippled critical services and disrupted daily life in the region.
“We want electricity or else we will be forced to take action,” said one protester. “We have gone to Kenya Power offices more than 50 times, pleading to be connected, but nothing has happened. We are tired of being ignored.”
The lack of electricity has had far-reaching effects on local businesses, with traders saying they are forced to close shop early due to insecurity and poor lighting. Residents also lamented the absence of functional dispensaries, clean water supply, and proper security infrastructure.
“At night, the town becomes a danger zone. Goons take advantage of the darkness to harass people. We need security lights and working street lamps,” said another resident.
Education has not been spared either. Parents and teachers reported that children are unable to study or complete their homework after sunset, further deepening the education gap in the county.
The protesters also decried the sorry state of roads, especially during the rainy season, when access to healthcare and markets becomes almost impossible.
“We pay taxes just like every other Kenyan. It is our right to receive basic services such as electricity and water,” the residents declared.
The group warned of unspecified action if their demands are not met, urging the county leadership and Kenya Power to respond promptly.
As the residents continue to press for answers, pressure is mounting on authorities to address the systemic issues affecting Garissa and restore public confidence in the delivery of essential services.
