The Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, has revealed how last year’s Gen Z protests disrupted the government’s housing agenda in Kirinyaga County.
Damages from the June 2024 protests
In a statement shared on X on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Omollo said the June 2024 demonstrations damaged parts of the newly built Kirinyaga Affordable Housing Project. This setback has stalled occupancy even though the project is fully completed.
“Despite its completion, occupancy has been delayed after parts of the facility sustained damages during the Gen Z protests,” Omollo explained.
What the project offers
The modern housing facility features:
- Two blocks of one-bedroom units
- Two blocks of two-bedroom units
- One block of bedsitters
- Seven retail shops to support local businesses
Omollo noted that the shops were designed to serve both residents and the wider community, boosting enterprise in the fast-growing agricultural county.
Call for protection of public infrastructure
The PS urged citizens to take responsibility in safeguarding public property.
“This unfortunate setback underscores the urgent need to repair the structures and, more importantly, the collective responsibility to protect infrastructure that serves communities,” he said.
Growing housing demand in Kirinyaga
Kirinyaga has experienced rapid urbanisation and rising demand for decent housing. To address this, President William Ruto laid the foundation stone for the project in June 2023.
According to Omollo, the development is among the first to be completed under the initial phase of the nationwide Affordable Housing Programme.
Next steps
Although damages have delayed occupancy, the PS confirmed the project is at 100% completion. Repairs are set to begin, paving the way for residents to move in soon.
