The government has allocated Ksh.10.3 billion for the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project in the Mt. Kenya region, reaffirming its commitment to achieving universal electricity access under Vision 2030. This funding is part of a broader Ksh.42 billion initiative aimed at delivering affordable electricity to underserved communities across the country.
Speaking during a visit to Kilimambogo in Thika East, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira emphasized the government’s resolve to extend electricity access to all regions. “Electricity is a critical enabler of development, and we are committed to ensuring no region is left behind,” he stated.
Under this initiative, Kiambu County alone has received Ksh.490 million, a significant investment that will connect hundreds of households and small businesses to the national grid. The project is expected to stimulate economic activity, improve local security, and accelerate development in areas such as Thika East.
At the official launch in Matathia Village, Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) CEO Dr. Rose Mkalama called on residents to safeguard newly installed transformers, warning of the rising threat of vandalism. She also urged the public to be vigilant against fraudsters soliciting money for connections, stressing that the service is fully funded by the government and provided free of charge to beneficiaries.
Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a praised the project, highlighting that over 1,750 families in her constituency are expected to benefit. She noted that increased electricity access will greatly support youth and small businesses, offering them the tools and infrastructure needed to thrive.
Residents welcomed the development with enthusiasm and gratitude. Many expressed optimism that the expanded access to electricity will not only enhance their living standards but also open up new opportunities for employment, entrepreneurship, and overall economic upliftment.
The Last Mile Electricity Project continues to play a pivotal role in transforming rural Kenya, bringing the country closer to its development goals and ensuring inclusive growth across all regions.
