The Kenyan government is exploring innovative strategies to strengthen communication with citizens, with an emphasis on digital platforms, social media, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, highlighted the critical role of inclusive and transparent communication in fostering public trust and accountability.
Speaking through his deputy, Amos Gathecha, Koskei stressed that the effectiveness of government programs increasingly depends not only on implementation but also on the equitable dissemination of information across all demographics, including youth, marginalised communities, the aged, and persons with disabilities. “Ensuring that every voice is heard is no longer optional but an obligation for responsive governance,” he said.
The emphasis on digital innovation was at the forefront during a strategic engagement held at Trade Mark Hotel, Gigiri, where half of the country’s Principal Secretaries convened to discuss enhancing government communication. Koskei underscored the potential of social media to shape narratives and unite citizens when content is clear, credible, and timely. He also encouraged the use of AI to craft constructive and engaging content for public consumption.
Government Spokesperson, Dr. Isaac Mwaura, noted the importance of tailoring communication to meet the needs of diverse groups. He emphasized that inclusive messaging, complemented by transparency, would counter misinformation and reinforce trust. Similarly, PS Stephen Isaboke highlighted that delays in responding to public queries create space for false information, underlining the need for prompt and accurate communication.
Experts at the forum recommended practical measures, including ensuring accessibility for persons with disabilities by incorporating translators and disability logos in content. Community media stations were identified as key partners in reaching marginalised populations and enhancing digital literacy. Additionally, the use of platforms such as TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) was encouraged to engage audiences directly and gather real-time feedback.
As a way forward, the government plans to implement a National Communication Policy pending cabinet approval. The policy mandates all ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to maintain an active social media presence. Capacity-building programs at the Kenya School of Government are equipping public communication officers with skills to leverage AI and new media for effective engagement.
With these initiatives, the government aims to modernize its communication approach, ensuring information is credible, inclusive, and reaches every Kenyan.
