The government has announced the development of a national framework to integrate talented youth into the National Youth Service (NYS). The initiative aims to equip youth with practical skills while linking them to opportunities for professional growth and economic empowerment.
The plan, spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, was unveiled by Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku during the Gen Z Football Tournament awards ceremony at Mbuinjeru Primary School, Kagaari North Ward, Embu County.
According to Ruku, the program forms part of a broader agenda to nurture youth talent and commercialize youth-led initiatives. “The youth in this country are full of potential. With proper structures and support, they can excel and earn a decent living from their talents,” he stated.
The government plans to expand NYS recruitment significantly from the current 20,000 youth annually to 40,000, with a long-term target of 100,000. This scale-up will be supported by commercialising NYS activities to generate revenue while providing skills tailored to both local and international job markets.
Ruku emphasized the importance of inter-ministerial collaboration to build inclusive and sustainable talent development programs, especially in sports and vocational training. He also highlighted the expansion of the National Sports Program, which aims to offer structured training and access to competitive platforms for youth across the country.
During the event, Tsunami FC triumphed over Mugui FC in a vibrant final match. Ruku lauded the teams for their discipline and passion, noting the potential of Kenyan youth to compete on global platforms if given the right support.
He also commended local leaders, including Kagaari North MCA Muchangi Mwariama and nominated MCA Susan Mwende, for organizing and supporting grassroots sports initiatives that keep youth engaged and contribute positively to the economy.
With this initiative, the government hopes to turn youth talent particularly in sports into a cornerstone of national development.
